Average Stem Cell Count For Cord Blood
What is the average stem cell count for an umbilical cord blood collection?
The average stem cell count for a cord blood collection is roughly 470 million TNC stem cells. On average, Americord gets twice as many stem cells from umbilical cord blood compared to other cord blood banking companies. Through Americord's processing techniques, over 18% of their clients have TNC counts that are twice the size of the industry average. Americord continues to increase our cord blood collection and the number of stem cells processed from umbilical cord blood.
Is it possible to get a below average stem cell count?
Yes, these numbers are only the averages. It is possible to get less than the average. If the collection volume or cell count is below a certain threshold, best practices indicate that the cord blood company contact the family to see if they still want to store the sample. With today's technology, if the stem cell count is below the threshold it is improbable that the client would be able to use this if needed for a treatment. This is because for many treatments there is a minimum amount of stem cells needed to give the treatment the best shot at being successful.
However, our processing techniques has yielded over 18% of their clients having TNC counts that are twice the size of the industry average.
If my sample does not meet the requirements, can I still save it?
Yes, some clients opt to save the sample regardless. It is possible that better technology in the future might enable the use of these cells or possibly the expansion of the cells. Several of our competitors store the collections regardless of these measurements without consideration of these factors, which really isn’t in the best interest of the client. If the yield is below par and the client decides not to store the sample, we do not charge. For us, we use the following criteria for notifying the client: below 100 million cells.
